I learned to answer the question “Hoe gaat het?” with “Goed”, but is this true every time? Of course not. This is one of the questions we ask automatically and answer even more so. Still, it won’t hurt to know the different ways to ask the same question or give an answer to it.

 The question

• Hoe gaat het met u/ jou? –  (u- formal, jou – informal) How are you? How is it with you?
• Hoe gaat het? – How is it?
• Hoe gaat het ermee? – How are you getting on? How are you doing?
• Hoe is het? (informal)  – How’s it going?

Afscheid

Wanting to learn Dutch quickly, sometimes I forget to slow down and enjoy the beauty and intricacy of the language. Here is a powerful poem by Adriaan Morriën, which reminded me of my initial motivation and main reason of learning the language – to be able to read in Dutch.

I will not dare to translate the poem, but I recommend that you read it out loud at least two times. It is so powerful and multilayered.

Zul je voorzichtig zijn?
